XMMS in Intrepid: All you need in a .zip file
All you need to be able get XMMS up and running in Intrepid (or Hardy), incl. FLAC, WMA, mp4, can be found in this zipped file.
UPDATE: THE LIBFAAD/M4A/MP4/AAC DIDN’T COMPILE (SOURCE IN THE ZIP) AND I COULDN’T SOLVE THE ISSUE, BUT THEN – AHA!! – I FOUND A .DEB HERE AND IT WORKS IN INTREPID:
If you need information about how to use it, look here, here, and here. So now I have XMMS running in Intrepid with all needed plugins – wouldn’t it just be nice if the olden golden player came back into the repos?

An easy way to collect it all – it was mainly for myself to have it uploaded and accessible – and perhaps it was useful for someone else; and it seems to be, many people download it..

all that installing stuff worked fine but now I can’ t run xmms. it shuts down right after starting it. (it appears for less than a second in the taskbar) xP

Run it from command line and check the output, for instance:
ALt + F2, then type “gnome-terminal” (in in Ubuntu) and then type:
xmms and see what it returns.
Check the plugins.
Uninstall xmms and reinstall it – might also work

In that case it sounds like you have /not/ followed the instructions provided, making it very difficult to know what your problem is and also, therefore, rather difficult to help you any further. If you follow the instructions you will end up with a (binary) xmms .deb that you can install and uninstall as you like.
When doing things with and on your system that you don’t fully understand and you are following instructions provided by someone else, then you should either follow them exactly or not at all. Don’t do something without knowing what you are doing – unless you really very carefully follow the instructions and learn from them!

I used the howto under the 3rd ‘here’ and followed it exactly like it was described there (except the step where you should download the tar.gz because it didn’t work – I took the file from that zip)

I just downloaded this deb package available from this page
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/i386/xmms
and ran “sudo dpkg -i xmms_1.2.10+20070601-1build2_i386.deb”
and that’s it!
